Changes After Construction:
  • During the events of 6–7 September 1955, the church, together with the cemetery, suffered serious damage.
  • On 6 August 2015, renovation permission was obtained from the authorized institutions, and restoration/renovation works were started.
  • The renovated church was reopened on 22 October 2017.
Prominent Features:
  • The church belongs to the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Istanbul.
  • The church is dedicated to the Transfiguration of Christ (Metamorfosis/Transfiguration).
  • The building displays an eclectic style with a cruciform plan and a central dome.
  • The exterior mosaics were made by Pretextat Lecomte.
  • The mosaic above the main entrance bears the inscription “Ο ΩΝ” (“He Who Is”), and the mosaic carries the signature “PRETEXTAT 1888” (Pretextat Lecomte, a French painter and decorator who lived in Istanbul and left many important works in the city).
  • The opening and consecration ceremony was conducted on 21 May 1889 by Sophronios, Metropolitan of Nicaea.
