Changes After Construction:
  • The first and second madrasas of the complex were converted into library functions and became the premises of the Süleymaniye Public Library; this library emerged in 1918.
  • After the collection allocated to the Ankara Ethnography Museum was sent to Ankara in 1927, the first madrasa was placed under the administration of the Süleymaniye Library Directorate.
  • Today, the Evvel and Sani madrasas serve as the Süleymaniye Library.
Öne Çıkan Özellikleri:
  • The Evvel and Sani madrasas stand side by side and symmetrically on the west side of the mosque; a narrow street lies between them.
  • The structures have a nearly square rectangular plan; they were built with cut stone.
  • The courtyard is porticoed on three sides; the north and south porticoes are covered with cross vaults, while the west portico is domed.
  • On the east side, there is an iwan in each madrasa, arranged with three arched openings and three domes; the rooms beginning at the sides of the iwans surround the porticoes and are covered with domes.
  • On the west axis, the projecting classroom space interrupts the portico; the classroom has a rectangular plan and is covered on the west side with a large dome.
  • Because of the slope of the land, a row of vaulted shops is located in the western section of the complex, beneath the Primary School, the Evvel and Sani madrasas, and the Medical Madrasa.
