The building existed in 1722 under the name Surp Asdvadzadzin; it was rebuilt and opened in 1814.
It was repaired after the 1840 earthquake.
After the fire of 1855, it was rebuilt in masonry; it was opened in 1858 and began to be known as Surp Takavor.
In 1858, the Hamazasbyan School and the Muradyan Girls’ School were established in the church courtyard.
In 1936, the inner courtyard was enlarged.
The entrance section was covered with a wooden roof and enclosed with glass on three sides.
It was repaired in 2006; in 2007, the bell tower was rebuilt.
The latest repair works were completed in 2011; two altars dedicated to Surp Stepanos and Sırpotz Karasnitz Mangantz were added to the entrance section.

The church belongs to the Armenian Patriarchate of Turkey.
In the courtyard are the graves of Garabed Muradyan and his wife Hatun Muradyan, who contributed philanthropically to the rebuilding process.
It was consecrated and reopened for worship in 2006; with the repairs completed in 2011, the worship arrangement and the entrance section were reorganized.
